Toni Tina Majorino is more comfortable with animals than with kids. In a restaurant, she candidly asks the waiter if he is gay, and he candidly answers.
She lets go of the balloon and she follows it with her eyes as it rises and rises. The mother is impossibly understanding, the motivations are much too simplistic, and the problems are all resolved a bit too neatly at the end.
Characters are constantly struggling to say what they feel about the man they have lost. Instead, it was about those left behind when he passed: The woman, Katharine, says nothing. The use of symbolism mostly of white balloons ,classical music and Shakespearian verse creates an almost ethereal air to this show.
More of a snapshot than a portrait,but in serious entertainment these days, I personally find that highly refreshing. She is silent, unreadable, and unknowable, and throughout the whole play, she never utters a word.
These were the moments that drove this story, not Richard Thomas as the non-infected lover of the late Andre. What does it mean to say, "sometimes if you really love someone, you have to let them go"? This is not only due to lack of tolerance, but also a lack of vocabulary: Thomas was merely depicting betrayal in a relationship, but Thompson and Sidney were portraying one of the few performances of a parent who cared for the child but not the lifestyle, and so few performances like these have been seen.
It might seem to be another sainted,gay people dealing with death and intolerance movie from these elements,but the brevity and care that this show is made with allows enough emotional bonding with the characters without tiring the viewer "Philadelphia" comes to mind here along the way.

Was this review helpful? Andre gets to be in an aquarium and be with the family. In the PBS adaptation, the mother played by Sada Thompson is given slightly more to say, but is still kept inscrutable for the most part.
Her father, Harry Keith Carradineis not very responsible, but he has a real gift for animals, and his wife manages to cope with the chaos and be "the only grown-up in the house.
